Book Update! Carbon 3 by Mark Schultz

Hi, everyone,

Mark Schultz’s Carbon 3 printer book samples have arrived! Shown here is the hardcover limited signed edition which is sold out thanks to you all!

The paperback edition is still available on our Flesk website:

https://www.fleskpublications.com/books/mark-schultz-carbon-3

I had the chance to show these to Mark before he flew back home after San Diego Comic-Con. We’re both thrilled with how well they turned out!

The extra bit of good news is that the printer was able to get these done in time to ship with Jeffrey Alan Love’s The Thousand Demon Tree book. Both are scheduled to arrive at our Flesk warehouse on August 25th. We’ll ship the Kickstarter orders and the Flesk online store pre-orders as soon as they arrive. If you pledged for both Jeff and Mark’s books we will ship them together.

Around August 14th we will send out an update that will give you a chance to include more Schultz books with your order.

More updates coming soon.

Thanks again!

Enjoy,

SFAL and Planet Comicon Kansas City Announce an Exciting New Collaboration!

SFAL and Planet Comicon Kansas City Announce an Exciting New Collaboration!

In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Planet Comicon Kansas City (PCKC), one of the country’s most popular and largest pop culture and comic book conventions, is joining forces with Spectrum Fantastic Art Live (SFAL), the region’s preeminent fantasy art show, to create an unforgettable event. Christopher Jackson, CEO of Planet Promotions LLC, which owns and promotes PCKC, and SFAL’s directors John Fleskes, Arnie and Cathy Fenner, are collaborating to bring the best of SFAL to PCKC 2019! This collaborative event will take place March 29-31, 2019 at the Kansas City Convention Center.

Planet Comicon Kansas City, is the largest annual public event in downtown Kansas City, MO, attracting more than 50,000 enthusiastic and passionate fans from the entire region for three days each spring. PCKC brings a wide range of talented comics creators, television and film actors, cosplayers, and pop culture vendors to the heartland. SFAL is known for the amazing variety of stellar artists who journey from around the world to Kansas City to showcase their work and meet their fans.

In 2019, the PCKC exhibit floor will feature an SFAL Pavilion centered around the SFAL directors and support team and showcasing attending SFAL creators. The goal is to bring attention to the unique creators joining PCKC and allow for a significantly larger retail venue for exhibitors. As with previous Spectrum shows there will be educational, social, and networking opportunities for creators that are so valued by the SFAL community.

One of the weekend’s many highlights will be the Spectrum 26 Awards ceremony, which will be held on Saturday evening, March 30. The gala will be held at the historic Folly Theatre, adjacent to the Kansas City Convention Center and will be open to all PCKC exhibitors, creators, guests and attendees.

PCKC will handle all table, booth, and ticket sales. Any questions should be directed to the Planet event manager via the official website or social media platform.

SPECIAL EXHIBITOR DISCOUNT OFFER TO SFAL MEMBERS

As part of the 20th anniversary celebration and this new collaboration, creators and vendors who have exhibited at prior SFAL events or been featured in Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art, are invited to purchase exhibit space for PCKC 2019 at a very special rate. Exhibitor space, both artists alley tables and vendor booths, will be available to the SFAL/Spectrum community at a 20% discount over standard PCKC rates will be valid only until September 30, 2018.

The discount will not be available past the reservation deadline and there will be no guarantee that late sign-ups will be seated in the SFAL area: PCKC’s 400,000 square foot exhibit floor sells out each year and the amount of space allotted SFAL’s exhibitors will depend on how many booths and table are spoken for by the 9/30/2018 deadline.

Regular admission tickets will go on sale at the PCKC website in early Fall.

How do I reserve a booth or table?

Please reply to this email indicating your interest in exhibiting under the SFAL umbrella at Planet Comic Kansas City. The staff at Flesk Publications will begin responding on Monday, August 13 with a hotlink and discount code. With the link and code in hand exhibitors will be able to view the rates and reserve space. The process will be similar to previous SFALs; please review all information regarding space and payment options. When prompted at check-out, simply enter the special code to receive your discount. As mentioned above, the discount code will be valid through September 30, 2018

We look forward to working together to make this a memorable event for everyone!

More details—including guest announcements, exhibitor information, and deadlines—will be forthcoming in the days and weeks ahead via direct emails. Up-to-the-minute news will be available via the official websites of SFAL and PCKC and the PCKC social media pages:

Flesk Exhibiting at San Diego Comic-Con, Booth #5019

We’re exhibiting at the San Diego Comic-Con. Here’s a peak at our Flesk booth #5019 before things get started.

Joe Benitez and Mark Schultz are appearing throughout the show! We hope you can stop by!

Arthur Adams, Wendy and Richard Pini, Mark Schultz, Gary Gianni, William Stout, Jim Silke, Mike Mignola, Terry Dodson and many more can all be found within a few aisles of one another–all of which are near our Flesk booth #5019. We brought our latest books with us and we hope that you get a chance to stop by and visit.

UPDATE:

I visited Comic-Con for an hour and a half in the evening and was lucky enough to see Warren Drummond and Jim Reid at the Flesk booth with Mark Schultz and James Walker.

On Friday evening I had the chance to chat with Gary Gianni, Tom Sniegoski, Geof Darrow, Kaitlund Zupanic, Alina Chau, Greg Preston and a few of our regulars at the booth during before heading over to the Eisner Awards.

The ceremony was amazing. Even though we didn’t win an Eisner for Line of Beauty: The Art of Wendy Pini, I felt that it was an extraordinary experience and don’t feel disappointed in any way.

Thanks to everyone who visited us at the Flesk booth during San Diego Comic Con!

As many of you know I took time off from the show while I spent the majority of my time with my son as we discovered new places during our daily adventures in and around the city. This quality time held great value to me as we took advantage of this freedom. I didn’t realize how much I needed a break. I’m grateful to James for watching the booth so that I could recharge and hang with the kiddo.

We visited the show for 2 hours on Saturday before the big Schoolism group dinner, and another few hours on Sunday prior to packing up the booth. I was able to say hello to all of the artists who I work with, and a few others who I know. I kept my promise to myself that I would not work the booth.

We had a nice lunch on Sunday with Frank Cho, Daren Bader, and Gary Gianni.

I thought the road closure out front, along with the restriction that did not allow non-badge holders to walk around the convention exterior area really helped to cut down on crowds and congestion when arriving and departing.

James let me know how the day went each night, and he passed along the nice comments and praise that was shared by all of you. We’re signed up again for next year and hope to see you again in the future.

Enjoy,

Flesk, Cho, Schultz, and Richard & Wendy Pini at the LA Ultimate Comic Art & Collectibles Show

We had a wonderful day today at the LA Ultimate Comic Art & Collectibles Show. It’s a new con with a traditional feel where the booths focused solely on high end comics and original art. Perfect for core collectors and aficionados. It was a bit staggering to see so many high end collectables in one place. The show organizers where fantastic, we sold a bunch of books, we met a lot of new people, and saw many old friends. It was definitely worth exhibiting at. I’m looking forward to next year!

The first picture is of Richard and Wendy Pini with Frank Cho and Gerhard. Wendy was admiring the show print by Frank and Gerhard, while Richard and Gerhard where doing some elbow talk!

It was our first time meeting Gerhard and his wife. Both were kind and delightful neighbors.

The second picture is of Mark Schultz sketching inside a copy of his Storms at Sea deluxe book for Richard and Wendy.

Kathy and I finished off the evening by filming Frank Cho working on a ballpoint pen drawing to use for an upcoming video to promote his upcoming book. More on that later.

A great day!

J.A.W. Cooper Pastoral Kickstarter Campaign–Thank You

Thank you for a successful J.A.W. Cooper Kickstarter campaign!

I’m feeling grateful and appreciate everyone who supported the campaign. I never take your support for granted. What excites me the most is that I have the opportunity to work with Cooper, to package and publish and then share her work, and that we have this chance to mail out packages to 878 backers. Wow! That’s what drives me every day. I absolutely love being a publisher. Having this chance to connect directly with our supporters is incredibly fulfilling.

Art of Al Williamson Book in the Works

I’m back to working on the new Al Williamson art book. Here’s a picture that I took of a stack of X-9 originals in Al’s studio to whet your appetite while you wait for me to finish the book.

Much of the detective work has been done. I have all of the art that I need with few exceptions. I just need to get scans of a handful of prime EC originals, and a few scans from Creepy, Eerie and House of Mystery–then there will be representation from just about every area that Al touched.

I haven’t set a release date. It’ll be done when it’s done. I’ve been wanting to do this book for the last 8 years. I’m pretty happy to be sitting here with Kathy as we chip away at it!

Enjoy,

John
