William Stout Murals Presentation and Book Signing at the San Diego Natural History Museum, Saturday, March 21, starting at Noon!

Stout

The San Diego Natural History Museum is hosting a special presentation and book signing by William Stout. Come celebrate the release of his new book, William Stout: Prehistoric Life Murals on Saturday, March 21. Stout’s presentation begins at noon at the main theater, followed immediately by the book signing in front of the museum store.

The William Stout program and lecture are free with Museum admission, either General Admission or with tickets to the BODY WORLDS exhibition which includes General Admission.  Admission tickets may be purchased in advance online at www.sdnhm.org or at the Museum.

The primary focus of a new art book, William Stout: Prehistoric Life Murals, is on the California painter’s recent creation of the twelve murals for the San Diego Natural History Museum’s Fossil Mysteries exhibit. The book also includes his mural work for the Houston Museum of Natural Science and Walt Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

This lavishly illustrated new art book features paintings that reconstruct life from its earliest appearances on this planet on up to 2000 years ago.

“I believe that murals are one of the scientists’ conduits to the public,” said Stout. “Artists can translate difficult scientific concepts into powerful, easy-to-grasp visuals for the public. They can function as a great teaching tool.”

In addition to featuring the finished murals unobstructed by their exhibit settings, Stout’s roughs and color studies illuminate in fine detail the thought processes and visual steps that went into the creation of each finished mural.

“I want the public to embrace each mural that I paint with a sense of regional pride,” said Stout. “One of the ways in which I accomplish this is by including well known local landmarks in the paintings whenever and wherever possible. My goal is to have my depictions change the way people see their familiar surroundings.”

As an example, Stout pointed out that some of the Fossil Mysteries murals include Cuyamaca Peak.

The highly readable text is surprisingly personal; Stout even makes mention of the cancer that delayed his completion of the San Diego murals. Stout generously credits all the scientists, artists, sculptors, craftspeople, museum personnel, photographers, institutions and family who helped him out with the murals; there are several reproductions of drawings by SDNHM staffer Jim Melli.

“I wanted to make it patently obvious that large murals depicting prehistoric life are never the work of just one person,” said Stout.

The museum is proud to present and support William Stout: Prehistoric Murals as the perfect book for budding (or even professional) artists, people with an interest in prehistoric life and dinosaurs, as well as folks with an interest and pride in the San Diego area’s rich biological legacy.

William Stout Murals Book Signing at Lee’s Comics

William Stout

We had a great time at Lee’s comics on February 21. William Stout was kind enough to draw people’s favorite dinosaur in their copy of Prehistoric Life Murals. Take a look at young Joshua’s personal copy pictured below.

Stout art

I was pleased to see many familiar faces show up. I’ve been shopping at Lee’s since the mid-eighties, and even worked at his Palo Alto location back in the mid-nineties. I always enjoy Lee’s generosity and beautiful shop. Thanks to everyone who showed up!

If you missed the Stout signing, you have a few more chances to meet him this month. He’ll be signing at Stellercon on March 13-15, and at the San Diego Natural History Museum on March 21, then at Dark Delicacies on March 22. For a full list of Stout appearances click here.

Al Williamson Flash Gordon Book Update!

Al Williamson Flash Gordon

Mark Schultz, Randy Dahlk, and myself are cranking away on Al Williamson’s Flash Gordon: A Lifelong Vision of the Heroic. We are very close to finishing the book. The final elements needed are to write a few captions, along with very minor design tweaks, and finishing the artwork clean up. Prepping the artwork is the most time consuming element left to do. This title is my number one priority. I will have it off to the printer in about three weeks from now. My expectation is that the book will start hitting the stores in late May 2009.

We came in with the lofty goal of trying to obtain 80% of the original artwork for the book. We found close to 90%. This artwork spans over fifty years and is displaced among collectors all over the world. I have to thank everyone who graciously provided scans of their originals. This book will be absolutely amazing because of their contributions.

Thank you all for your patience. I know we are behind, but we feel it is better to put out an amazing book late, than a sub par book on time.

Norman Rockwell Museum Article in the New York Times!

Alice Carter, a trustee at the Norman Rockwell Museum, sent me the following email and link.

“I was delighted this weekend when the New York Times published an article on the museum, its signature artist, and the field of illustration in general. In case you missed it, here is the link.”

It’s a nice article that is worth reading.

Enjoy,

Recent Art Books I’ve Enjoyed

I picked up some terrific art books over the last year. Here are just a few of the ones that I truly enjoyed.

Spectrum 15

Spectrum 15. The book I most look forward to each year. It is always a treat to receive. There’s the usual masters as well as many wonderful artists I was previously unaware of.

Scorchy Smith

Scorchy Smith and the Art of Noel Sickles. This book received most of the positive buzz from my circle of friend’s this year. And we’re a picky bunch of guy’s. I was delighted when I received mine. It looks like a true labor of love with interesting and easy to read text. There’s plenty about Sickles as well as his lifelong friend Milt Caniff. It features great reproduction with clean design. All of the Scorchy Smith strips are included! A very handsome volume.

Complete Pirelli Calendars

The Complete Pirelli Calenders. Gorgeous design and photographs. I love the simplicity of design in this collection. A very classy book. By the way, if you enjoy portrait and model photography like I do, Howard Schatz latest book H2O is worth checking out.

Leyendecker Abrams Book

J.C. Leyendecker, published by Abrams. Finally, a serious look at this artist, as the authors made available his first true biography. Lots and lots of artwork to look at. Many are from originals, and the reproduction is top notch. It is obvious that this book was twenty or more years in the making. A much needed book for one of my favorite illustrators.

Complete Don Martin Collection

The Completely Mad Don Martin collection. I’ve been laughing at Don Martin’s Mad magazine cartoons since I was a kid. Having them all in one massive two-volume set is a treat. Nice oversized packaging with the art one per page.

Kiskaloo

Kiskaloo by Chris Sanders. Wow, this guys art is amazing! Sanders was the designer for Disney’s Lilo & Stitch. You can visit his website here and get Kiskaloo and his sketchbooks from  Bud’s Art Books or Stuart Ng Books.

MÉLANGE by Dean Yeagle. This is the best collection on Yeagle’s work so far. Full of art and nice reproduction. He has worked for Disney and has been a longtime contributor to Playboy Magazine through his one-page cartoons.

Fables Covers by James Jean. Stunning design and beautiful art.

Most of these books can be purchased through Bud’s Art Books or Stuart Ng Books.
