This is part four of the artist interviews filmed during the Spectrum Fantastic Art Live 2 event in Kansas City, Missouri last May. It features Paul Bonner, Dan dos Santos, Tara McPherson, Mark Schultz and Greg Spalenka.
We are working on the new websites for Spectrum Fantastic Art (slated to go live on October 1) and Spectrum Fantastic Art Live (this fall). Once they are ready I will start posting individual extended length interview features on the artists shown in parts 1 through 4 of this interview series. There’s plenty of good footage to look forward to!
We arrived back from Comic-Con last Tuesday. We had our best show ever! Thanks to everyone who stopped by.
I took some pictures and have stories to share, but first we are focusing on shipping out the Flesk store orders that came in while we were away, and the Mark Schultz Kickstarter campaign orders. We’ve processed about 700 of the 900 orders so far. We’ll be wrapping things up by the end of this week. At that time I look forward to sharing words and pictures.
This third part of the Flesk Films artist interviews produced during the second Spectrum Fantastic Art Live event in Kansas City, Missouri in May 2013 features Brom, Greg Manchess, Jean-Baptiste Monge, David Palumbo, John Picacio and Terryl Whitlatch.
Part four will be posted toward the end of this month.
Jim Silke will be at our Flesk booth #5019 on Thursday (July 18th) morning to the early afternoon during Comic-Con International. He will be sitting with his friends Mike Mignola and Geof Darrow at their booth #4901 on the Wednesday preview night. (There’s a pair you won’t want to miss either.)
Jim will have original art to view and purchase. These are the only two days he will be at the show, so you will want to be sure to bump him up to the front of your list of people to see. We will have copies of Jim’s Jungle Girls and Jim Silke Sketchbook on hand.
There’s lots of cool Mark Schultz things going on at Comic-Con next week (to distract you from asking or wondering where Storms and Sea is). His new art book, Mark Schultz: Carbon and new printing of the complete Xenozoic collection that prints all the stories written and drawn by Mark to date, and a new print, “Beyond the Known Forest, She Talks with Birds” (visit my July 7 post to learn more about the print) will debut at the show.
Thanks to our Kickstarter supporters and pre-orders from our Flesk website we will have less than 100 copies of the deluxe hardcover of Carbon (limited to 600 copies) at the show and only about 30 copies of the Xenozoic deluxe hardcover (limited to 500 copies). After these are gone, they will be sold out. We’ll have plenty of paperback editions of both at Comic-Con which Mark will be pleased to sign for you.
And I have a bonus item to announce for Comic-Con. We have a Mark Schultz 8 x 10″ print that we will be giving away for free with any purchase at the Flesk booth, or $5.00 by itself. Mark will sign it if he is at the booth when you pick it up. There’s a good chance we will go through them all at the show.
These are the guaranteed times Mark Schultz will be at our Flesk Publications / Spectrum fantastic Art Live booth #5019.
In addition, Mark will be appearing at our Flesk panel. Here are the details and time:

Witches and Fey, Monsters and Mortals
Sunday July 21, 2013 2:00pm – 3:00pm
Room 24ABC
That vamp’s a tramp; this witch is a real bitch. Pixies will pinch, and the fey go beyond fairly frightening. The ghouls are ghastly, and we mere mortals are growing testy. Oh, and that creepy-looking fella is sprouting fur from his feet, and who knows “were” else! Jeanne Stein (the Anna Strong series) encourages S. M. Wheeler (Sea Change), Leigh Bardugo (The Grisha Trilogy), Brom (Krampus), Morgan Rhodes (Falling Kingdoms), Amber Benson (The Calliope Reaper-Jones series), Seanan McGuire (The October Daye series), Rachel Caine (the Morganville Vampires series), and C. Robert Cargill (Dreams and Shadows) to provide perspective on the monsters of myth.
Thanks to our Kickstarter supporters, we have a new Mark Schultz signed print on offer titled, “Beyond the Known Forest, She Talks with Birds.”
This oversized print measures 18 (H) x 24 (W) inches. It is printed on premium acid free 95 lb. cover stock with a matte finish and it utilizes archival inks. Each print will come signed. At a full two feet wide, this print will showcase Mark Schultz’s artwork at its original size. In addition, the piece has been colored by the original Xenozoic Tales series cover colorist, Denise Prowell–supervised and with touch-ups by Schultz. Mark’s traditional transparent watercolor technique has been used for a brilliant unique look.
We are taking pre-orders on our website now. They will begin shipping at the end of July. The printer informed us that they will be ready just in time to pick up on our way to Comic-Con. I’ll have Mark sign them before the doors open and we will debut them at the show.
We will ship out the prints to our Kickstarter supporters immediately after we return from the convention.
Terry Dodson will be premiering his Bombshells 7 collection at Comic-Con International. His booth number is 4706. This collection showcases his most recent commissions, preliminary work for personal projects and material from his private sketchbooks. All artwork has been hand-picked by Terry and designed to meet the standards of his critical eye. I helped Terry package this book. You can pre-order it now and we’ll ship the copies right after the show, around July 25th.
Terry will also have original art for sale at the show!
I am working with Richard and Wendy Pini on two new art books collecting the best of Wendy’s art over the course of her 35 year career. The Art of Elfquest will highlight key covers, story pages, portfolio plates and rarely seen images from its earliest days to today. Wendy Pini: The Line of Beauty will focus on her stellar work outside of ElfQuest including comics, illustration and private art with a detailed biography exploring every facet of Wendy’s passion for telling stories. All traditional artwork is being reproduced from the original art.
We put together a Wendy Pini Teaser providing a glimpse into the subject matter covered in The Art of ElfQuest and Line of Beauty. The art included will not be reproduced in the two volume book set.
This 2013 Teaser is limited to 1000 signed and numbered copies. We will premier it at our Flesk booth #5019 at Comic-Con and it is available exclusively from Flesk and from Richard and Wendy Pini at the show. You can also order it on our website.
Bruce Timm is a special guest at Comic-Con International this July 18-21. We have a new Bruce Timm 2013 Teaser that will premiere at the show. It features all new B.T. art and comes signed, numbered and limited to 1000 copies. It will only be available direct from Flesk.
You can find Timm at the NFR booth #4700 and the Teaser at the Flesk booth #5019.
Inside the Teaser you will find an all new collection of personal drawings highlighting the beauty of the female form. The majority of these twenty works feature nudes with a sampling of art in the fantasy and horror genres.
